EDI's Supportive Housing Program dates back to the organization's early days on Walnut Street, where six rooms were provided for people in early recovery who lacked a safe place to live.  Since then many changes and improvements have taken place. However, the primary purpose remains the same: to provide individuals who are starting their journey of recovery a with a safe, secure place to live, to help them learn to live a clean and sober life and to gain greater self-sufficiency. EDI currently hosts 63 housing beds at its two facilities serving 37 male and 26 female clients.

1.Homelessness (as defined by the Department of Housing and Urban Development)
2.Chemical Dependence, (based upon criteria defined in the DSM-IV-TR)
3.Commitment to recovery from addiction, including a willingness to maintain abstinence and to actively participate in a program of recovery.
4.The need for recovery support services, such as employment/education assistance, life skills development, structure & accountability, relapse prevention, etc.
5.Local criminal justice system clients must be non-violent offenders and be currently involved with the Adult Probation Department in good standing.
6.While Berks County residency is not a requirement for admission, public funding for services is not available for at least 90 days for non-residents.

EDI's Permanent Housing Program for persons with disabilities is our newest type of supportive housing. Permanent Housing enables special needs populations to live as independently as possible in a longer term setting. Residents may live at EDI for an unspecified length of time and receive supportive services that will enable them to learn to live as independently as possible. The supportive services may be provided directly by EDI or coordinated by EDI and provided by other public or private agencies.  EDI currently has 30 individual rooms for men or women dedicated to Permanent Housing at our Hilltop Recovery Community Center. Admission to EDI's Permanent Housing Program is based upon the same criteria as our Transitional Housing Program, plus  a  documented disability (as defined by the Department of Housing and Urban Development)

In addition , EDI offers Emergency Shelter/Bridge House Program which provides temporary lodging, food and other services to meet the basic needs of people in early recovery who are homeless. This program serves individuals whose addictions have contributed to their homeless state and made it difficult to obtain or maintain stable housing. EDI currently has 13 Emergency Shelter/Bridge House beds for men or women at our Walnut Street facility.

Individuals who do not meet EDI's admission criteria are referred to other transitional or permanent facilities, recovery homes, local shelters, treatment centers or detoxification units as appropriate and available. EDI reserves the right to accept or reject candidates for admission at its sole discretion.
